The law of opposites (general post)
(This post is a work in progress, and subject to extensive revision)
One of my most useful learning tools for gospel understanding, is to look at the opposite side of the message. From that, we gain even more understanding. We can often use simple concepts taught to children, up/down, left/right, inside/outside, forward/backward, etc. The law is best described with a set of examples:
What is said, and what is not said. (examples needed here)
Standing in the air, standing on the ground. Angels of the Lord appear standing in the air, which represents the heavens. The devil appears standing on the ground, representing his earthly domain. So what would happen when the Earth enters the terrestrial state from its current telestial state, during the 1000-year millenium. Food for speculation. (See Doctrine and Covenants section 76 in the scriptures at www.lds.org, for descriptions of the three kinds of heavens. Or make a frantic dash to the phone, and call your local LDS missionaries for their explanation.)
Spiritual and temporal. So many lessons here, that it will be a separate blog. A classic example is that LDS temples often stand on hills, with night floodlights shining far and wide. There is also a celestial spiritual light that shines from the temple throughout the temple district. That spiritual light does make a difference in the people of the district.
