How People On The Other Side Wait

I was at the Draper Temple dedication at our stake center, on Sunday afternoon March 22, 2009. We waited at the chapel doors until they were opened promptly at 3:00 PM. I felt the spirit of the temple boil out like a rushing wind. Inside the stake center felt like being in the temple.

One of my favorite hymns, "Let The Mountains Shout For Joy" was the opening hymn. The choir sang with beautifully blended voices. The speakers talked of the blessings of the temple.

That night, I had an inspiration about how people on the other side of the veil feel about waitng for us to submit their names for ordinance work.

It feels like they visit their mailbox every day. Every day, they open the mailbox with trembling fingers. Maybe today is the day. I have been waiting so many days.

There is nothing. The mailbox is empty. They feel in every corner. Nothing. With great tears, they visit their friends. "John, there was nothing today. Nobody remembered me. I have to wait another day." "Mary, I didn't get the letter. I don't understand why nobody remembered me." "Peter, I didn't get the letter. How I wish I could tell my wife, who I haven't seen for a hundred years of days."

Then one day like all the thousands of others, they open the mailbox with trembling fingers. There is a letter! Could it be THE letter? They open it. It says matter-of-fact, "Your baptism into the eternal covenant has been scheduled at the Mount Timpanogos Temple for Saturday April 23, 2009 at 1:21 PM. You are invited to attend this glorious event. If you accept, a messenger will arrive one hour prior, to escort you to the baptistry."

Yes! (waving letter)

You fly to your friends, waving the letter frantically. "John! I have the letter! I have the letter! My baptism has been scheduled!" "Mary! They remembered me! I'm going to be baptized!" "Peter! I have the letter! I have the letter! I have the letter! I'm going to be baptized! It will only be a short time after that until I can see my wife! We will be an eternal couple! I'm going to hug her like crazy! I'm going to hug that hero who submitted my name like crazy too, when they come to our side of the veil! I will find them, no matter what."

(Interestingly, at this point, my computer crashed, due to a brief power glitch. It was like someone didn't want me to make this post. Fortunately, either the Firefox browser or Blogger had saved the text.)
